The Cabinet Secretary said she had asked for “urgent guidance” on banning the dogs after a “terrific” attack on a young girl aged 11 in Birmingham.
However, the inclusion of the American Bully on the banned list falls under the remit of the Department for the Environment, where the PA news agency understands that there are doubts as to whether it would be feasible to add the dog to the list.
The American Bully is not recognized as a breed by the Kennel Club, and it could be difficult to define. Some fear that a ban could make it illegal to own several other dogs.
Ms Braverman reacted to reports that West Midlands Police were investigating the incident after the girl, who was with two men who intervened, was injured on Saturday in Bordesley Green.
