The legislation, which would be the nation’s most comprehensive greenhouse gas disclosure mandate, would require thousands of publicly and privately held businesses with annual revenues of $1 billion or more to disclose their direct and indirect GHG emissions.
The aim is to boost transparency and encourage companies to assess how they can reduce their emissions.
The bill was one of California’s most high-profile climate-related initiatives this year, garnering endorsements from Patagonia, Apple, and former UN Secretary-General Christiana Figueroa, a key architect of the Paris climate agreement in 2015.
Democratic Assemblymember Chris Ward said,
We are out of time on addressing the climate crisis, This will absolutely help us take a leap forward to be able to hold ourselves accountable.
