Nearly four decades after the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, justice continues to elude the victims of the tragedy. On Wednesday, twelve U.S. congressmen wrote to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) demanding that Dow Chemical Company (Dow), one of the key perpetrators of the tragedy, comply with repeated summonses to appear in court issued by India.
The letter, signed by Congressmen Rashida Tlaib, Pramila Jayapal, and Frank Pallone Jr., among others, demanded that Dow Inc. comply with the notice of show cause issued by India in accordance with the mutual legal assistance treaty on criminal matters, 2001.
All the 12 US Congress members sent a letter that said,
The Department’s action is creating an indelible stain upon our nation’s reputation for upholding international legal and moral standards that must be corrected,
